Congressman Thomas Massie

Representing the 4th District of Kentucky

Issues

Defense and National Security

National Defense is the most essential function of the federal government enumerated in the United States Constitution.  We must defend our national security interests.  The exclusive power of our Congress to declare war is a constitutional mandate.

Economy and Jobs

America’s sluggish economy and persistently high unemployment are due to our government’s massive debt,  over regulation of our businesses, and a  tax system that punishes achievement.  -  Nobel Prize winning economist Paul Krugman was one of my professors at MIT.  He failed to convince me then that Keynesian economic policies could work.  Krugman, like Keynes, believes governments can bo

Education

I support eliminating the federal Department of Education and returning K-12 funding and curricula to the states.  Schools should be locally managed and accountable.  Parents have the right to choose among all educational opportunities for their children, including home schooling, public schools, and private schools.

Energy

With dual engineering degrees from MIT in the fields of Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering, I am keenly aware of the practical issues involved in energy production.  In fact, I designed and built my own house which generates all of its own power using a combination of solar, geothermal, propane, and wood.

Federal Reserve Transparency

As Lewis County Judge executive, my primary objective was to find and eliminate waste, fraud, and abuse in local government.

I plan to continue that mission in Congress by fighting for a full Audit of the Federal Reserve. The American people deserve to know how their money is spent.

Foreign Affairs

In extraordinary circumstances, it may be in our national interest to temporarily provide foreign aid to allies in need.  One Bill, One Vote, One Country is an appropriate policy.  Foreign aid provided to a specific country should be subject to an up-or-down vote on its own merits, not bundled in an aid bill for multiple countries.  We should never provide foreign aid to countries hostile

Health

There exists no constitutional authority for the federal government to impose a mandatory health care plan.  I will therefore fight to repeal Obamacare.  Healthcare is a personal issue and belongs in the private sector.  The most efficient path to lower-cost, high quality healthcare is to open the healthcare industry to free-market forces.  Insurance should be available across state lines

Immigration

Immigrants who seek to enter our country must do so legally. Most immigrants enter this country to find work and to create a better life for themselves and their families. However, illegal immigration strains federal resources and threatens our national security.

Right to Life

I believe that life begins at conception.  I will vote against government funding of abortion services and will vote to defund Planned Parenthood.

Second Amendment

I will work vigorously to defend the rights of gun owners.  The Right to Keep and Bear Arms is not principally about hunting or recreation.  In fact, the Second Amendment to our Constitution is our Founding Fathers’ restatement of our natural God given right to defend life, liberty, and property.

Spending Cuts and Debt

The federal government’s $17.5 trillion national debt now exceeds our nation’s Gross Domestic Product.  This lunacy must stop.  Private industries regularly balance their budgets by implementing real spending cuts.  The federal government should hold themselves to the same standard.

Tax Reform

Taxes are too high and too complicated.  My wife and I have three engineering degrees from MIT and we can’t do our own taxes!  As the founder of a company, I understand how the tax code throttles the development of new businesses.  Our tax system needs to promote economic growth, not punish it.  I will support legislation to achieve a simpler, flatter, fairer tax code that is helpful, not
