I spoke on the House floor to urge my colleagues to get rid of an alarming loophole that has allowed more than 2,000 suspected terrorists to legally purchase firearms during the last 11 years in the U.S. We donโ€™t allow felons, domestic abusers, and the adjudicated mentally ill, to purchase guns. The same should apply to suspected terrorists. Share your thoughts and e-mail us at LujanGrishamGVP@mail.house.gov

Today, the House passed my amendment to the Resilient Federal Forests Act that would allow the U.S. Forest Service to establish a pilot program to execute contracts with Tribes under the Indian Self-Determination and Education Assistance Act (ISDEAA). ISDEAA contracts allow Tribes to manage and implement federal programs in Indian country, which help ensure that programs meet tribal needs and support tribal self-determination and self-governance. Allowing the Forest Service to execute ISDEAA contracts with Tribes for projects under the Tribal Forest Protection Act of 2004 will improve the Forest Serviceโ€™s ability to partner with Tribes to work on projects that impact tribal lands and forests.

During this weekโ€™s hearing on SNAP, I got the opportunity to discuss the importance of nutrition education and encouraged grocery stores to hire nutritionists and dieticians to help customers, who shop with limited resources under SNAP benefits, to choose healthy foods. This is especially important for people with special diets and chronic illness. I also asked that stores expand successful programs like the AARP and Kroger grocery store nutrition tour program to states like New Mexico, that have high poverty rates, high obesity rates, and high risks for chronic illness. http://www.aarp.org/health/healthy-living/info-2015/hungry-seniors-health-nutrition.html

I'm a proud co-sponsor of the Presidential Accountability Act. My respected colleague, Representative Elijah E. Cummings put together this great video that explains the Emoluments Clause and asks what's standing between Donald Trump and the U.S. Constitution? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qtVz62r8sSY

Emolument. It's a word that a lot of people have been using lately, but what does it mean? In 1787, our founding fathers came together in Philadelphia to dra...

The employees at WIPP have delivered steady, deliberate progress that led to today's re-op-opening of this critical project. I appreciate their commitment to the safe and secure storage of our nation's nuclear waste.

I love that our entrepreneur community in New Mexico isn't limited by age. Alissa Chavez turned a great idea, which started as a science project, into a practical solution to a potentially deadly problem. Thank you, Alissa, for you ingenuity and hard work. https://www.abqjournal.com/…/young-inventor-creates-app-to-…

As we celebrate the holidays this weekend, please keep in mind that veterans, as well as their family members, may be experiencing a crisis. For those who need it, the Veterans Crisis Line is available at all hours by calling 800-273-8255. Some of the signs to look for are:
-Hopelessness, feeling like there's no way out
-Anxiety, agitation, sleeplessness or mood swings
-Feeling like there is no reason to live
-Rage or anger...
-Engaging in risky behavior
-Increasing alcohol or drug abuse
-Withdrawing from family and friends

Just in case you need some good news todayโ€ฆ Jeff Padilla is a mail carrier who works at the North Valley station in my neighborhood. Like other post offices, that station is particularly busy this time of year. On top of gifts and Christmas cards they process, the station receives many letters addressed to Santa Claus. While kids typically receive a generic letter in response, Jeff and his wife, Debbie, take the time each year to draft a personal response to every child that sends a letter through the North Valley station. Those responses from Santa include stickers, glitter and stamps โ€“ a personal touch that exemplifies the spirit of Christmas. Huge thanks to Jeff and Debbie Padilla. We have a lot of caring people in our community, and we should always be grateful for them.

I joined several colleagues in sending a letter to President-elect Trump expressing concern over reports that his transition team asked for personal information about DOE employees, including professional society memberships, affiliations, and the websites they maintain or contribute to. Those inquiries were on top of the transition teamโ€™s attempt to determine which DOE employees worked on the issue of climate change. These requests are outrageous and a dangerous sign that President-elect Trump is targeting the academic freedom of DOE lab staff, which is so critical to the effectiveness of the scientists and researchers working on national security issues at the 17 national labs, including Sandia. 40 years ago today, 5 Members of Congress came together to create the Congressional Hispanic Caucus. Next Congress, the CHC will have a record breaking 31 members. Hereโ€™s to 40+ more years of advancing the legislative priorities of the Latino community! #tbt

On this day we remember the courage and commitment of the men and women who defended Pearl Harbor. I continue to draw inspiration from their selfless service. World War II veterans, and indeed all veterans, represent the best of America. I had the chance to meet with a group of World War II veterans who shared with me their sacrifices in defense of our democracy. I am very grateful for all of our stateโ€™s veterans, and I continue to keep them in my thoughts and prayers.
