Congresswoman Michelle Lujan Grisham

Representing the 1st District of New Mexico

Immigration

As the Whip of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, I have been working hard to achieve comprehensive reform that keeps families together, provides a tough but fair earned pathway to citizenship, enhances border security, grows the economy and is in line with our core American values. The Senate has done its job by passing a bipartisan bill, and nearly 200 Democrats and Republicans have sponsored a similar bill, H.R. 15, in the House of Representatives.

As we continue important bipartisan work aimed at growing the economy and reducing our nation’s long-term deficit in a balanced way, fixing our broken immigration system provides a unique opportunity to achieve these goals. Passing comprehensive immigration reform will create 1,800 New Mexico jobs this year alone and reduce the federal deficit by nearly $850 billion over the next 20 years.

It’s time to side with a majority of the American people in addition to countless business, faith and community leaders and finally pass immigration reform with an earned path to citizenship. Our economy cannot wait any longer. Our country cannot wait any longer. The time to act is now.
