Congressman Evan Jenkins

Representing the 3rd District of West Virginia

Immigration

Our immigration system is broken, and the solutions must come through robust debate in Congress. Congressman Evan Jenkins understands there are numerous issues when it comes to immigration and these issues must be addressed through the congressional lawmaking process.

Evan strongly opposes this administration’s desire to legislate by the stroke of a pen. The people’s voices must be heard in this important issue, and immigration policies should not be made through executive order. It is the constitutional responsibility of the U.S. Congress to write our nation’s laws. Those who enter this country illegally should not receive skip-the-line passes ahead of those waiting to enter legally and lawfully.

Congressman Jenkins recently joined with his colleagues to vote for legislation to fund the Homeland Security Department, secure our borders, and defund President Obama’s unilateral approach to immigration. Evan knows the first step in any immigration policy is to secure the borders and then to focus on reforming a broken system.

The congressman is particularly concerned about the rise in the number of sanctuary cities – cities that refuse to turn over arrested illegal immigrants to federal authorities. Evan voted to ban these sanctuary cities from having access to certain federal grants in the Homeland Security appropriations bill. Rep. Jenkins also cosponsored the CLEAR Act, which will stop taxpayer dollars going to sanctuary cities. Federal immigration laws exist to protect American citizens, and we should not reward cities that break these laws.
