Congressman Mike Quigley

Representing the 5th District of Illinois

What Keeps America Safe

U.S. Representative Mike Quigley (IL-05) speaking to colleagues on the House floor about the need to reprioritize  federal funds towards more effective U.S. homleand security programs to keep Americans safe in a new age of threats.

The government’s ability to keep America safe relies on its capacity to adapt quickly to new and evolving threats. In the years following 9/11, the U.S. made significant changes to our intelligence and law enforcement capabilities that have stopped over 60 terror plots against the U.S. and saved countless American lives. But 9/11 was 15 years ago. The threats we face today are vastly different than the threats we faced then.

The recent attacks in Paris and Brussels also showed that specific and credible threats are becoming harder to detect. The ability to collect intelligence on terrorist intentions and terror plots is more challenging because of new encryption technology and the reliance on lone wolf attacks.

It’s time we reprioritize resources to confront this new reality. We must provide our intelligence and law enforcement agencies with the funding and the flexibility they need to adapt to the ever evolving threats we face. We must work with our European allies to vastly expand their intelligence resources and capabilities. And we must partner with our international allies to eliminate ISIS’ safe haven in Syria and Iraq.

Chicago Tribune: Keeping America Safe Requires New Thinking

In today's world, the threats we face are constantly changing, and the government's ability to keep America safe relies on its capacity to adapt quickly to these new and evolving threats.

Keeping America Safe

Chicago Tribune: What if Mike Quigley is right about Wrigley as a potential terror target?

U.S. Rep. Mike Quigley is nobody's fear-mongering right-winger. He's a liberal Democrat — smart, practical, prudent — whose district roams from Chicago's North Side west into DuPage County. Many of his fellow congressional Democrats don't like to talk much at all about terror threats; they think doing so is bad for the Obama administration's image. They leave the terror talk to Republicans.

U.S. News and World Report: What Really Keeps Americans Safe

The deadly attacks in Paris and San Bernardino have opened up a new front in our war against the Islamic State group, exposing vulnerabilities that Congress has a responsibility to respond to both at home and abroad. In these trying times, Congress needs to provide leadership and answer the question: What really keeps Americans safe?
