Quigley Statement on House Republicans’ Vote to Gut Ethics Watchdog

Jan 3, 2017
Press Release

WASHINGTON – Today, U.S. Representative Mike Quigley (IL-05), founder and co-chair of the bipartisan Congressional Transparency Caucus, released the following statement after House Republicans voted to cut powers of the independent Office of Congressional Ethics (OCE):

“Good government is rooted in openness, honesty and integrity, and the Office of Congressional Ethics plays a critical role in upholding these fundamental values. As the first, and only, independent body to have an oversight role in the House, the OCE is the watchdog we need to strengthen accountability, increase transparency, and foster public trust.

“It is shameful that House Republicans are seeking to enhance one-party rule by undermining this non-partisan panel through a secret Caucus vote held behind closed doors. This move sends a dangerous and distressing message to the American people at the start of a new Congress, especially following empty promises to drain the swamp. Our constituents deserve an efficient, effective and open government protected by independent investigations. We must continue to shine a light on the halls of our government so that we do not return to darker days plagued by unreported scandals and overlooked ethics issues that weaken our democratic institutions.”
