Today, Congresswoman Terri Sewell and Congresswoman Diane Black (R-TN) introduced the Fair Medicare Hospital Payments Act of 2016 (H.R. 4428), a bipartisan bill that increases Medicare reimbursements for rural hospitals in Alabama and other states with large rural populations.
Congresswoman Terri A. Sewell (AL-7) released the following statement after the Alabama State House passed a General Fund Budget that includes a $156 million cut to the state Medicaid Agency:
“I am outraged that the Alabama State House of Representatives cut $156 million from the Alabama Medicaid Agency. This is a fiscally and morally deplorable way to cover the state’s budget shortfall. The impact on Children’s Hospital, rural hospitals and nursing homes would be devastating, if not fatal.

“The Supreme Court has once again affirmed that the Affordable Care Act is the law of the land. Today’s ruling by the Supreme Court is a victory for the 132,000 Alabamians who will be able to keep their health insurance, including 17,000 of my constituents in the 7th Congressional District.
Access to quality and affordable healthcare should be a right and not a privilege.
To date, 29 states, including the District of Columbia, have made the critically important decision to expand Medicaid. I urge the State of Alabama to expand Medicaid without delay. Alabama's reluctance to expand Medicaid has placed access to quality health care out of reach for too many of our state's working poor families and individuals.
