Sarbanes Statement on U.N. Security Council Resolution Regarding Israel

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman John Sarbanes (D-Md.) released the following statement concerning the prospect of an Egyptian-sponsored Security Council resolution regarding Israel:

"The longstanding policy of the United States is to exercise its veto power in the Security Council when members of the United Nations seek to unfairly target our ally Israel or circumvent the framework of direct, bilateral negotiations between the Israelis and the Palestinians concerning a two-state solution. The proposed Egyptian resolution – which for the moment has been withdrawn – would have fallen squarely into that category, thereby warranting a U.S. veto.”
