Congressman Tom Reed

Representing the 23rd District of New York

Reed Guards against Big Government

January 6, 2017
Press Release

Amid a flurry of last minute activity from the Obama Administration, the House will take up a proposal to curb some of the President’s regulatory enthusiasm; a move Tom Reed supports. As part of Reed’s continued efforts to check reckless government regulations, Reed will support the Regulations from the Executive in Need of Scrutiny (REINS) Act. “The message is clear: regulations kill jobs. We care about protecting our small businesses, working families and farmers and we know these regulations often have negative and unintended consequences on these groups,” said Reed. “It’s only right that we put a stop to these efforts and spare many from politically motivated big government overreach.”

The proposal prevents the Federal Government from enacting rules that would have a large negative impact on the U.S. economy.  If a rule from any Department or Agency would have an impact of 100 million dollars or more on the U.S. economy, it would require Congressional approval prior to going into effect.

The bill passed the House last year but failed to move forward before the end of the previous Congress. Reed cosponsored the bill during the last Congress and has declared his intention to do so again this Congress.

“This is just another step toward responsible and responsive government,” Reed continued. “We need better review of our regulatory process and I think this pushes us toward that goal.”

The proposal has cleared the House, moving to the Senate for further consideration.
