Congressman Norcross Calls for Investigation into Foreign Election Interference

Jan 6, 2017
News Release

Washington, D.C. – Today, Congressman Donald Norcross joined more than 170 of his House colleagues in introducing the Protecting Our Democracy Act to create an independent commission to investigate foreign interference in the 2016 U.S. elections and how we can prevent interference in future elections.

“Our nation’s intelligence agencies and independent sources have concluded with high confidence the Russian government interfered with the 2016 election.” Norcross said. “Any party or candidate could be targeted in the next election. For our democracy to survive, we must all stand together against any and all foreign interference in our elections.”

The Protecting Our Democracy Act would create a bipartisan commission to independently examine what happened, why it was done, and how we can prevent interference in future elections. The 12 members of the commission would be appointed within 90 days of enactment by the Speaker of the House (3), Senate Majority Leader (3), House Minority Leader (3), and Senate Minority Leader (3), and the commission would choose a chair and vice chair of different parties.

“We’re calling for an independent investigation to ensure we’re able to prevent foreign governments from meddling in future elections. As New Jersey and other states across the country prepare for 2017 elections just months away, we must take action on this issue now,” Norcross said.
