Private-sector employment up in 27 states and D.C.;

Hourly earnings up in 29 states and D.C. over past year

 

WASHINGTON – Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-NY), Ranking Member of the Joint Economic Committee (JEC), today announced the release of the latest State Economic Snapshot, a new report aggregating August’s statistics on jobs, unemployment and earnings in all 50 states and the District of Columbia.

According to the report, private-sector employment increased in 27 states and the District of Columbia in the month of August, and the unemployment rate fell in 17 states. Homes values appreciated in 49 states and the District of Columbia between the second quarter of 2015 and the second quarter of 2016. Hourly wages increased in 29 states and the District of Columbia between August of 2015 and August of 2016. Real median household income increased in all 50 states and the District of Columbia between 2014 and 2015.

“Today’s state-by-state analysis of our nation’s economy shows more evidence that we continue our steady recovery from the worst economic meltdown since the 1930s,” Rep. Maloney said. “Wages are up, unemployment is down and businesses are adding jobs. There can be no doubt that our economic policies are working. We need to continue this growth so everyone can benefit.”

The report allows for state-by-state comparisons across a variety of economic statistics. For example, the largest private-sector job gains in August were in California (35,200 jobs), Florida (22,600), Texas (18,500), Virginia (12,400) and Tennessee (10,500). On a percentage basis, the largest gains were in the District of Columbia, New Hampshire, Utah, Mississippi, Tennessee, Nevada and Virginia.
