Internships

The Commerce Committee offers full and part-time summer, fall, and spring internships in Washington, D.C. for undergraduate, graduate, and law students.

The internship program allows students to work closely with staff on a variety of issues within the Committee’s jurisdiction.

Start and end dates for internships are flexible, but generally the summer session runs from mid-May to the August recess. The fall session runs from September to the end of December, and the spring session runs from January to mid-May. Applications will be considered on a rolling basis.

Committee Intern

Intern duties include assisting staff with research, writing, and managing the front office. Interns will also have the opportunity to learn more about the legislative process, watch Senate floor votes, and attend hearings, briefings, and meetings with staff.

Press Intern

Interns who are interested in press and social media are welcome to apply for a press internship. Solid writing skills are a must, and creative skills in graphic design or video or photo editing are a plus. Please indicate your particular interest in a press internship in your cover letter.

Law Clerk

This clerkship is a great opportunity to learn how a congressional committee works. Applicants must be currently enrolled in law school or a recent law school graduate. Law clerks will work closely with staff on a wide variety of legislative and oversight projects. Tasks will include performing legal research, drafting letters and memos, preparing for and attending hearings, briefings, and meetings, and assisting with administrative tasks. In addition to the resume and cover letter required for all other Committee internships, please also include a transcript, references, and writing sample (five to 10 pages). Please indicate your particular interest in becoming a law clerk in your cover letter.

Bipartisan Administrative Intern

The Commerce Committee’s bipartisan office offers unpaid administrative internships for undergraduates and recent graduates. Duties include preparing for committee hearings and markups, attending hearings, assisting the legislative counsel, supporting staff with daily administrative tasks in the front office, and drafting letters and other projects as assigned. Please indicate your particular interest in an administrative internship in your cover letter.
