Committees

At the beginning of the 113th Congress, Congressman Lamar Smith was selected to chair the Science, Space, and Technology Committee. He also serves on the Judiciary Committee and Homeland Security Committee. Congressman Smith is a former Chairman of the Judiciary and Ethics Committees, and a former member of the Budget Committee.

Below is a brief description of each committee:

House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology; Chairman

The Science Committee is responsible for overseeing a range of programs at NASA, the Department of Energy, the Environmental Protection Agency, the National Science Foundation, the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Institute of Standards and Technology. The Committee promotes legislation that encourages scientific discoveries, space exploration and the development of new technologies.

House Committee on Judiciary

Established in 1813, the House Judiciary Committee is the second oldest standing committee in Congress. This Committee has jurisdiction over a number of matters from immigration, terrorism, crime and intellectual property to constitutional amendments, anti-trust, patents, and copyrights. In addition, the Committee is responsible for oversight of the Departments of Justice and Homeland Security. 

House Committee on Homeland Security

The Committee on Homeland Security was established in 2002 to provide Congressional oversight for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and better protect the American people against a possible terrorist attack.
