Senator Murkowski E-Newsletter for July and August, 2016

I was so happy to be able to spend a good portion of July and all of August at home in Alaska as the Senate adjourned for a longer than normal state work period. It was a productive, informative, busy, and rejuvenating time. I treasure every moment that I spend in our state, with my family, and all of you. From traveling along the Yukon and Kuskokwim rivers and points in-between, to taking selfies with former interns in airports and local ferries, to meeting people at farmers markets in communit… Continue Reading

Senator Murkowski E-Newsletter for April 19, 2016

Travel in Alaska can be an adventure - flexibility is key. I was in Fairbanks for an Energy Committee field hearing several weeks ago with a busy day scheduled the following morning in the Mat-Su Valley. Pavlof had other plans for my travel. The volcanic eruption grounded all air traffic in the Interior, which meant that I got to borrow a toothbrush and spend the night with my sister. With travel still shut down the next day, we decided to drive the Parks Highway south to Anchorage. The 360 mile… Continue Reading

Senator Murkowski E-Newsletter for February 23, 2016

Hello Alaskans! It has been a busy six weeks since we began the New Year. The Senate's legislative agenda began early with my Energy Policy Modernization Act on the floor for debate. I have been working to craft this comprehensive energy bill for the past year, and I'm pleased to have it before the full Senate. Energy-related news was briefly eclipsed in January by serious snowfall in Washington, D.C. which shut down the Capitol-at least for some. (Believe it or not we had to include language … Continue Reading

Senator Murkowski E-Newsletter for July 13, 2015

Hello, Alaskans - It was energizing and educational to be home for the Solstice Weekend in June and the Fourth of July work period, catching up with so many of you! Before I update you about my work in Washington, D.C. and across Alaska, I must share with you my extreme disappointment that the Obama administration is cutting 2,600 soldiers from Fort Richardson and 75 from Fort Wainwright. This does damage to our national defense capability as well as our state's economy. I am troubled that th… Continue Reading

Hello Alaskans, It was great to be surrounded by so many of you when I was up in Alaska for the Memorial Day state work period. It's vital for me to be on the ground, talking directly with Alaskans on issues that you're thinking and worrying about, so I can see what we can do to best facilitate solutions back in Washington, D.C. I look forward to catching up with even more of you during the Independence Day state work period later this month. Thank You to our Firefighters (Click image … Continue Reading

Senator Murkowski E-Newsletter for May 5, 2015

Greetings, Alaska! Last week I returned from a trip to Iqaluit, Nunavut, Canada, where the United States assumed Chairmanship of the Arctic Council. The Arctic Council is comprised of the eight Arctic nations which come together to cooperate and collaborate on issues facing the North. Taking the lead of the Arctic Council for the next two years provides an opportunity for us to make the Arctic a national priority. I continue to press the administration on our preparedness to take on our obliga… Continue Reading

Senator Murkowski E-Newsletter for March 13, 2015

Hello from Washington, D.C., where a week after most of the Senate (but not me) shut down for snow, it's hitting spring-like temperatures in the 60s. We have been busy with budget hearings in committees and have begun our appropriations subcommittee work. The best part of my recent days is visiting with so many Alaskans who have made the trip out here to Capitol Hill. It's D.C.'s version of March Madness! Here are some stories about my recent trips back home, along with an update on what I've b… Continue Reading

An Update from D.C. - The 114th Congress is off to a running start, and I am optimistic about all the opportunities this presents for Alaska. I am now Chairman of two Committees that hold great potential for positive developments in Alaska: Energy and Natural Resources, as well as Interior Appropriations. Having oversight of the budgets of the Interior Department, Indian Health Service, Bureau of Indian Affairs, Forest Service, and the EPA is more important than ever right now. Last week, th… Continue Reading

Greetings, Alaskans! I'm back in Washington, D.C. after a fantastic August work period in Alaska. Over the month, I was honored to have the opportunity to travel all across our great state, visiting a number of communities, from western Alaska to the Interior to Southcentral and back to Southeast. While I loved every minute of it, it was not a vacation; it was an opportunity to see firsthand the issues that Alaskans are facing. Tuesday, August 26, 2014 Greetings, Alaska! August is marked down on the U.S. Senate schedule as a "State Work Period" for lawmakers to head back home. So I have to chuckle when I hear some call it "recess" as if it's some sort of vacation at a playground. I work just as hard during August on the home front as I do when I'm back on Capitol Hill. Day in and day out I'm traveling all around the state determined to hear from as many Alaskans as I can about your opinions, your hopes, and your co… Continue Reading

Greetings, Alaska! A week in the state is good for the mind and body. Over the 4th of July weekend, I was able to escape the heat and humidity in Washington and enjoy the fresh air, sunshine (and showers) from Fairbanks to Wrangell. All over the state people are talking about fishing.
