I had a blast taking part in Jefferson County Public Schools Make the Connection program with 7th graders at Meyzeek Middle this morning. These smart students asked great questions about career choices and the many opportunities available to them in our community.

Kynect has been the single most successful state-run exchange in the nation, providing expanded care at lower costs and one of the main reasons why we’ve seen the uninsured rate in Kentucky decline more than any other state. Governor Bevin’s decision to abandon this national success story will jeopardize coverage for tens of thousands of residents, increasing costs and leaving them with far fewer plan options. His decision to rush Kentuckians into the federal exchange by November 1 will create additional confusion and result in even more loss of coverage for residents. It’s unfortunate that the misguided campaign promises and foolish political posturing of one man will do so much harm to so many Kentucky families. This is a sad day for our Commonwealth.

The Centers for Medicaid and Medicare Services on Tuesday told Gov. Matt Bevin that all major milestones for the switch had been met.

While a national conversation on ways to improve policing in America has certainly begun, it is increasingly clear that the change we need is not happening nearly fast enough. There is no more telling sign that we are losing our way than the fact that we are becoming numb to the near-daily footage of black lives being cut short at the hands of law enforcement officers. We cannot allow this to be the new normal, and we cannot afford to wait. Every day that talk does not turn to action is another day that could, and likely will, lead to another life lost. We must immediately begin the difficult work of eliminating excessive, deadly force and improving the racial attitudes of both our law enforcement and the communities they police. It's long past time for our nation to acknowledge, through word and deed, that black lives matter.
