President Obama and many members of Congress support an “all of the above” national energy supply strategy that relies on power from oil, gas, nuclear and renewables.

San Diego’s Downtown has grown into a thriving center for arts, business, tourism and urban living. Ask any resident or business owner what challenges remain, and most will cite homelessness.

Next month, Congress will vote on whether to affirm the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) among Iran, the U.S., European allies, China and Russia. After weeks of careful study, it is clear to me the JCPOA is our best tool to prevent Iran from building a nuclear weapon for at least the next 15 years. I will vote to support the agreement.

Our military deserves congressional support for its desire to invest in a diversified energy portfolio; it will save money and save lives. Some of that support could come through passage of the Department of Defense Energy Security Act (DODESA), legislation I reintroduced with support from several of my colleagues. DODESA will improve the operational and installation sides of the military’s energy platform, saving money, enhancing national security, and protecting our warfighters from needless harm.

The increased frequency and magnitude of extreme weather has resulted in immense recovery costs. In 2011 alone, disasters left $170 billion in damages in their wake. These annually increasing costs are in many ways preventable. Research has shown that every $1 spent on preparedness saves $4 in disaster recovery costs.

We strongly agree with President Obama that no deal is better than a bad deal. Additionally, while the negotiations have not yielded an agreement by the June 30 deadline, we urge U.S. negotiators to stay at the table until they come to a deal that eliminates every Iranian pathway to a nuclear weapon. We have outlined the criteria we believe any deal should include in order to meet that objective.

The medical device tax hinders job growth in the industry and keeps companies from investing billions of dollars into research and development. According to multiple industry surveys, approximately three-quarters of its members have deferred or canceled capital investments, reduced investment in start-ups, experienced difficulty raising capital, or deferred pay raises for employees because of the medical device tax. While these resources could be used to cultivate the next generation of life-saving devices, they're instead being sent to the IRS.

An affordable higher education for every American willing to work for it is central to ensuring future generations can achieve the American Dream and is directly tied to our nation’s ability to compete in the global economy. I would not have been able to attend college without student loans and work study programs opening the door for me. We should be making it easier and more affordable for students to go to college, not pushing it financially out of reach for more and more families.
