Committees

Congressman Joe Wilson currently serves on three committees consisting of subcommittees that oversee specific types of legislation. To learn more about the jurisdiction of the subcommittees Joe serves on, please read the following information:

House Armed Services Committee 

The House Armed Services Committee holds jurisdiction over general defense policy, ongoing military operations, the organization and reform of the Department of Defense and Department of Energy, and the Cooperative Threat Reduction program. Additionally, it has jurisdiction over specific issues, such as counter drug programs, detainee affairs and policy, acquisition and industrial base policy, technology transfer and expert controls, joint interoperability, and the Department of Energy nonproliferation programs. The House Armed Services Committee maintains six permanent subcommittees and an Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee. Each of our subcommittees have differing jurisdictions, which overlap on key issues, but all are dedicated to providing for the men and women of America's Armed Forces and the nation's common defense. I am honored to lead the Subcommittee on Emerging Threats and Capabilities and serve on the Subcommittee on Tactical Air and Land Forces.

Subcommittee on Emerging Threats and Capabilities, Chairman 

The Subcommittee on Emerging Threats and Capabilities is responsible for overseeing counter-terrorism programs and initiatives and counter proliferation of weapons of mass destruction. Additionally, this subcommittee oversees U.S. Special Operations Forces, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), information technology and programs, force protection policy and oversight, and related intelligence support. It makes sure that our nation is protected against terrorist attacks and unconventional threats. Subcommittee on Tactical Air and Land Forces
The Subcommittee on Tactical Air and Land Forces conducts oversight of ammunition programs, Army and Air Force acquisition programs, all Navy and Marine Corps aviation programs, and National Guard and Army and Air Force National Guard and Reserve. This subcommittee authorizes procurement and R&D programs to ensure that America’s soliders and airmen are fully equipped to carry out their mission and keep our nation safe. House Committee on Foreign Affairs 
The House Committee on Foreign Affairs considers legislation that impacts the international community and oversees the Department of State, the Agency for International Development (USAID), the Peace Corps, the United Nations, and the enforcement of the Arms Export Control Act. The committee is responsible for oversight and legislation relating to foreign assistance, treaties and other international agreements, international law, international broadcasting, and international law enforcement issues, including narcotics control programs and activities. Subcommittee on the Middle East and North Africa

Subcommittee on Terrorism, Nonproliferation, and Trade

The Subcommittee on Terrorism, Nonproliferation, and Trade has oversight and legislative jurisdiction over U.S. efforts to manage and coordinate international programs to combat terrorism and efforts to bring international terrorists to justice. House Committee on Education and the Workforce 
The House Committee on Education and the Workforce has general jurisdiction over education and workforce matters and oversees programs that affect hundreds of millions of Americans—from school teachers and small business owners to students and retirees. The committee works to build on vital reforms we set in motion during the past decade — pressing for parental empowerment and local control in education; modernization of outdated federal rules that stifle liberty and innovation; and dependable access to health care, retirement security, and training for American workers. Subcommittee on Health, Employment, Labor, and Pensions 
The Subcommittee on Health, Employment, Labor, and Pensions has jurisdiction over all matters dealing with relationships between employers and employees, including, but not limited to, the National Labor Relations Act, the Labor-Management Relations Act, and the Labor-Management Reporting and Disclosure Act; the Bureau of Labor Statistics; and employment-related health and retirement security including pension, health, and other employee benefits and the Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA).
