If you live in the pre-evacuation area of the Maple Springs and Old Roughy fires please be ready to leave if you are asked to go. While leaving areas affected by wildfires watch out for snags (fallen trees caught up in other trees), they are extremely dangerous.

Since 2007, the VA may have misdiagnosed traumatic brain injuries for thousands of North Carolina veterans including nearly 3,000 in the Winston-Salem area. Diagnostic tools and treatment options for traumatic brain injuries have advanced significantly in the last decade. If you believe the VA may have misdiagnosed you, please contact the VA at call 1-800-749-8387. If you need any additional assistance, my staff may be reached at 1-800-685-8916.

The VA confirmed nearly 25,000 veterans may have been misdiagnosed.

I believe the American people deserve to have a full accounting of Secretary Clinton’s practices and a complete picture of her actions as Secretary of State. We should allow this to go through the complete processes, this time including all of the emails on Clinton’s server.

It is disgraceful that the government is asking veterans to repay their bonuses. We owe our veterans a debt of gratitude. It’s time to do the right thing and allow these vets to keep their bonuses. If not, Congress will fix this problem.

Congress wants Defense officials to stop taking cash back from veterans who improperly qualified for enlistment bonuses, but a full fix may require legislative action.

From the New York Times: "In Raleigh, N.C.,18 plans are available for 2017 from two insurers, but the premiums could be a substantial expense for some consumers. For a 53-year-old man with income of $53,000 a year, the cheapest midlevel silver plan will cost $714 a month, or $8,568 a year, according to the federal website, and no subsidy would be available."

Consumers in some states will also find significantly fewer insurance companies offering coverage under the Affordable Care Act.

Tomorrow I'm participating in the Down Syndrome Association of Greater Charlotte Buddy Walk.

There are still too many barriers in our society that prevent Americans with Down Syndrome from realizing the full potential of their God-given gifts. Down Syndrome Awareness Month is a good time to remember that we must keep fighting to tear those walls down.

Our veterans deserve quality leadership at the VA. Recycling failed leaders isn't the answer.

Although VA Secretary Bob McDonald has asserted that more than “90%” of the VA’s medical centers have “new leadership” or “leadership teams” since he took over the troubled agency in 2014, a USA TODAY investigation found the VA has hired just eight medical center directors from outside the agency du...
