Today, I joined 168 of my House colleagues in calling on the President-elect to rescind his appointment of Steve Bannon. The article below includes a variety of opinions about Bannon's selection as a senior advisor, including mine:

"President-elect Trump has committed to being a ‘president for all Americans,’ and I am ready and willing to work with his Administration to improve the lives of all Americans. But when he appoints as his top advisor someone who helped build the racist, sexist, and anti-Semitic Alt-Right movement and who has been accused of making anti-Semitic statements himself, President-elect Trump’s calls for unity ring hollow. I urge the President-elect to reverse Steve Bannon’s appointment and reassure the country that his White House will stand for tolerance and against bigotry in all of its forms."

In South Florida, we're fortunate to have so many veterans and their families as our neighbors, relatives, and friends. As the son of a World War II veteran, I was proud to join in commemorating the sacrifice of all those who have served in our armed forces today at the Fort Lauderdale #VeteransDay Ceremony. I cannot think of a group of Americans more deserving of our recognition, and we owe them a tremendous debt.
We must promise to leave no veteran behind once they return home. It is our solemn responsibility to provide our veterans with the benefits they earned, the health care they need, and the economic opportunities they deserve.

I encourage everyone to exercise your right to vote tomorrow if you haven't already. Let's reflect on the Greatest Generation who defeated tyranny to safeguard our freedoms, the suffragettes who marched to ensure women have the right to vote, and the civil rights champions who bravely stood up to violence to expand voting rights for African Americans. Also consider the men and women who serve in harm's way every day around the globe to keep us safe. Choosing to stay home tomorrow, electing not to vote, is an insult to the blood and sweat and sacrifices of so many brave Americans throughout our history. Tomorrow is your opportunity to make your voice heard. Tomorrow you can remind the world what democracy looks like. Tomorrow you can honor America by fundamentally helping to shape its future.

Florida Atlantic University is answering the call to build resilience by joining a coalition of academic centers that are working to ensure that future buildings are resilient to the effects of climate change, like sea level rise. Let's not leave our children and grandchildren to suffer. We can all do our part to recognize the realities of climate change and take action.

It was an honor to participate in today's unveiling of the 2016 Hanukkah stamp at Temple Beth El of Boca Raton. I was thrilled that the US Postal Service chose to hold this historic event right here in South Florida, a community that embraces the values of diversity and family that the holiday stamps portray.

It's been a busy week in South Florida, and I've been privileged to meet with so many amazing constituents every day, including:
✓Discussing the vital importance of the US - Israel relationship with the Jewish Federation of Palm Beach County
✓Speaking about the vital need to fully expand LGBTQ rights nationwide at the Pride Center in Wilton Manors
✓Updating the city commissions of two great Broward County cities - Lighthouse Point and Wilton Manors - about current topics in Washington, infrastructure projects, climate change, and our South Florida economy
✓Sharing the story of my support for increased breast cancer research and awareness at the Not My Daughter Find a Cure Now luncheon

It was great to honor the inductees to the Broward Education Foundation Hall of Fame this morning. Congrats to George Platt on Lifetime Achievement Award; Ric Green, Nancy Botero, and Senator George Lemieux on Community Achievement Award; Rocky Gillis, Olayemi Awofadeju, and Angel Gomez on their Education Achievement Awards; and Robert Runcie, Florida's Superintendent of the Year.
I appreciate their commitment to strengthening our schools and providing opportunities for our teachers to help their students succeed.

We heard a little bit about Social Security at last night's debate. I believe the best way to extend the program's solvency is to strengthen it. Here's an idea: let's pass my bill to phase out the income cap on Social Security deductions. My bill would require high-come earners, including both of the presidential candidates, to fully contribute to Social Security.

Most of you know that I'm passionate about animal protection. I'm thrilled to have recently received a 100% score from The Humane Society of the United States for my 2016 voting record. I introduced the PACT Act to make animal cruelty a federal offense, and I've also supported:
✓ Pet and Women Safety Act to protect women and animal victims of domestic violence
✓ Prevent All Soring Tactics Act to crack down on harmful soring practices on horses
✓ Humane Cosmetics Act to phase out cosmetic testing on live animals
✓ Safeguard American Food Exports Act to end horse slaughter for human consumption

This morning, I was honored to speak at the OIC of South Florida Middle Class Summit, and yesterday I toured the Ft. Lauderdale All Aboard Florida Station.

Both were a great opportunity to discuss the importance of employment growth and good-paying jobs. My vision for improving South Florida's economy includes quality public schools, encouraging STEM education, and tackling the burden of student loan debt.

Yesterday I waded through the streets of Fort Lauderdale that are flooded due to higher than normal King Tides. I joined with climate experts, local businesses, and government officials to see how rising sea levels and salt water encroachment are making these natural tide events even worse for coastal residents – flooding our beaches, impacting tourism, and threatening our cities.

South Florida residents deal with the effects of climate change every day. I invite my colleagues in Congress to come to Florida and see the King Tide for themselves.

When the influence of super PACs and anonymous donors is unlimited, voters have less voice in our electoral system. I introduced the Democracy For All Amendment to overturn Citizens United and get big money out of our politics.

Congratulations to United Way of Broward County on receiving two well-deserved grants from the Department of Labor and the Department of Veterans Affairs.
On any given night around our country, around 60,000 veterans will be homeless. United Way's Mission United Program will use the grant funding to continue its work fighting veteran homelessness in Broward. The organization has already helped thousands of veterans struggling to adapt to civilian life, and these funds will allow them to positively impact even more lives.

Join me and Rep. Lois Frankel tonight for a student financial aid workshop to learn about how to plan and pay for college.
