Bustos will have a “Key Voice” in House Democrats’ Effort to Reach Working Families in America’s Heartland
WASHINGTON – In case you missed it, Congresswoman Bustos’ election to join Democratic House Leadership as the new Co-Chair of the Democratic Policy and Communications Committee (DPCC) has garnered major coverage across our country. Below are several stories about her new role:
After being elected to a leadership role in the House Democratic Caucus Monday, Rep. Cheri Bustos is primed to shape outreach and communications efforts for a party that suffered a series of pivotal losses in November’s election.
Bustos was tapped to co-chair the Democratic Policy and Communications Committee after winning every county in her downstate swing district last month.”

Bustos stressed the importance of continuing to incorporate jobs and the economy into Democratic messaging and outreach, encouraging members of her party to talk about those issues “in a way people understand.”

“I can’t predict exactly what’s going to happen under the Trump Administration, but I do know this, we have to continue talking to working families,” Bustos said. “We have to continue to talk about our solutions, and we’ve got great ones.”
And as Democrats across the country try to figure out what went wrong on Election Day, one of the questions they’re asking is how to appeal again to rural and small-town voters.
It appears Bustos, in particular, will be a key voice on that.
On Tuesday, Rep. Bustos said Democrats must talk about what they are doing to make things better for working families.
“We’ve got to talk about jobs and the economy,” she said. That includes equal pay for equal work, Rep. Bustos said, and providing tax incentives to companies that keep jobs in the U.S. and denying them to companies that would move them out.
Bustos: “You know, we’ve got to make this about families and working families. That is my family’s background. I come from a long line of farmers. I’m a granddaughter of a hog farmer. My father-in-law’s a UAW retiree, built combines at – for John Deere. And we’ve got to be able to relate to those people. How you do it? You talk to them. You listen. You know, I’m a former newspaper reporter. It’s what I did for 17 years. And, you know, what do you do as a good reporter? I mean, you are one, you listen to people.”
“This week, Nancy Pelosi nominated Bustos as Co-Chair of the Democratic Policy and Communications Committee to hone the Democrats’ message to working class voters.”

At a meeting late Monday, House Democrats picked Bustos and two others to co-chair the Democratic Policy and Communications Committee, a group that aims to communicate the party’s agenda and how it is different from House Republicans.”
