Congresswoman Linda Sanchez

Representing the 38th District of CA

Working Families

I am dedicated to advancing women’s rights.  I always fight to ensure that every American woman receives equal treatment in the workplace and in school.  I also advocate my hardest for policies that protect women’s health, and work to get more women and girls involved in their communities.

  • Ending Gender-Based Discrimination - Gender-based discrimination continues to be a big problem for women in the United States.  Disparities between incomes of male and female workers are well-established.  Despite recent efforts to reduce this income-gap, women still earn about 77% of their male counterparts.  In 2009, I was an original cosponsor of the landmark Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, which is designed to reduce gender based discrimination in the work place.  Women should receive equal pay for equal work, and I am proud the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act became law on January 29, 2009.
  • Defending Women's Health Care Access - I have always been a steadfast supporter of the Title X Family Planning program, which is designed to provide access to contraceptive services and women’s health education.  I will continue to oppose cuts to Title X funding because they are vital to educating women and girls in California's 38th Congressional District.
  • Female Veteran Unemployment - Tough economic times have left millions of Americans unemployed.  Studies have shown that one in seven female veterans in California is unemployed.  Even worse, female veterans are more likely to be homeless then non-veteran women.  This is unacceptable, and I am doing my best to bring awareness to these growing challenges for female veterans.  Click hereto see me speak to CBS News about the barriers that female veterans face when looking for a job after returning from serving our country.
  • Promoting Equality in High School and College Sports - Women deserve to receive equal treatment across the board, which is why I oppose efforts to cut funding for women’s collegiate athletics. Sports develop self-esteem, leadership, and provide many physical and mental health benefits to young women. Girls should have the same access to athletic teams as boys do. That is why I have always been a vigorous supporter and defender of Title IX.
  • Promoting Healthy Women - I am deeply concerned that heart disease, stroke, and other cardiovascular diseases are the leading causes of death among females in the United States, killing more than 500,000 women each year.  Most recently, I have cosponsored H.R. 3526, the Heart Disease Education, Analysis, Research, and Treatment for Women Act.  This bill will help improve the treatment of heart disease, stroke, and other cardiovascular diseases in women.
  • Preventing Breast Cancer - I want women to have the best chance to prevent breast cancer and I believe that research and early detection are crucial in this fight. Most recently, I cosponsored H.R. 111, the Breast Cancer Patient Protection Act to help women fight this terrible disease.  As your representative in Washington, I want to make sure critical programs to fight breast cancer get the funding they need
