As your representative in Congress, I have always supported legislative efforts that protect our environment, invigorate our workforce, help American families, and ensure our nation's prosperity. Now more than ever, the United States needs to move in a new direction to attain energy independence and to protect our natural resources from the real dangers of global warming.
Financial Services
As your representative, I have worked to restore economic stability, help homeowners facing foreclosure, protect consumers, protect taxpayers, and strengthen regulations for the financial institutions whose risky behavior contributed to the economic collapse in 2008.
Immigration
The United States is a proud nation of immigrants. Like the generations who came before, the most recent newcomers want what all Americans want: to raise strong families, build safe communities, practice their faith in freedom and seek new and better opportunities for their children.
Judiciary, Crime, and Guns
Standing up for the safety of our communities is something that I have been doing since my earliest days in the House of Representatives. On February 16, 1993, I stood in the well of the House of Representatives and said,
“I believe the threat and danger of semi-automatic assault weapons in this country are grossly understated.”
Health Care
Health issues affect us all and determining the best means of addressing them is an important part of my work in Congress.
Intelligence and Military
I served on the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence. The Committee has oversight over the various intelligence agencies and monitors security developments around the globe.
Protecting Workers
Supporting the rights of workers has been one of my commitments since I first ran for elected office. Our workers are the backbone of the economy and deserve wages and protections equal to the value they contribute. I have worked to end discrimination in the workplace and ensure the fundamental rights of workers are upheld.
Puerto Rico
I was born in Chicago to parents who migrated from Puerto Rico in the 1950’s and I later returned with them to live on the Island in the 1960’s. As a Puerto Rican member of Congress and someone who represents Puerto Ricans in Illinois' 4th Congressional District, I closely follow issues affecting the Island and my constituents with strong ties there.
