Swalwell Returns to Afghanistan, Meets with Military Officials & Troops for Update on Security Transition

August 31, 2015
Press Release

AFGHANISTAN – U.S. Representative Eric Swalwell (CA-15), a member of the House Intelligence Committee, returned yesterday from a bipartisan congressional delegation trip to Afghanistan. Swalwell met with military leaders and troops for an on-the-ground update of our efforts in Afghanistan to ensure the peaceful transfer of power and root out militant Islamic terrorism.

“Our mission in Afghanistan has dramatically shifted in the past year, and efforts to assist the Afghan government in a more limited role are paying off” said Swalwell. “As part of my role as a member of the Intelligence Committee, I received detailed updates from Afghan government officials and high-ranking U.S. military commanders on the U.S. troop drawdown and the transition to Afghan-led security. Our leadership and training is helping Afghans stand up and take control of the security of their country, a sharp contrast to the troubling security situation in Iraq where we do not have a willing partner and stable environment.”

It was Swalwell’s second visit to Afghanistan. In August 2013, he traveled to Afghanistan on a trip led by the House Armed Services Committee.

“The best part of the trip was meeting with U.S. troops bravely serving in Afghanistan, including many from California,” added Swalwell.
