Equality For All
Everyone should be treated equally under the law. Love is love and I’m thrilled the Supreme Court overturned the discriminatory Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) and returned marriage equality to California in 2013. We should all have the same chance to live up to our given potential. Discrimination based on race, creed, color, national origin, religion, gender, sexual orientation, or gender identity simply has no place in modern society, and we must do all we can to stamp it out.
What I am Doing for You
I voted for an amendment to prohibit funds from being used in contravention of President Obama’s executive order protecting LGBT employees of government contractors from discrimination.
I cosponsored H.R. 1619, the Paycheck Fairness Act. This bill would improve pay equity protections for women. (I also cosponsored this as H.R. 377 in the 113th Congress.)
I cosponsored H.R. 197, the Respect for Marriage Act, which would have repealed DOMA in its entirety. (I also cosponsored this as H.R. 2523 in the 113th Congress.)
In the 113th Congress:
I cosponsored H.R. 1755, the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA). This bill would ban discrimination in employment on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity.
I cosponsored H.R. 3560, the Universal Racial Profiling Elimination Standards, and Procedures for Effective Constitutional Rights Training (RESPECT) Act. This bill would prohibit law enforcement and Department of Homeland Security (DHS) grant recipients from engaging in racial profiling, require training to fight racial profiling for DHS, and collect data on racial profiling.
I signed a letter to the Departments of Education and Justice asking for the federal government to explore ways it can better protect Sikh children from harassment and bullying.
