West Rail Bridge and Dock 16 Open for Commerce and Trade

August 7, 2015
Press Release

On Friday, August 7, 2015, Dock 16 at the Port of Brownsville and the West Rail Bridge both opened to international trade and commerce.

It is fitting that these two projects were inaugurated on the same day, because both will advance economic opportunities for Brownsville and South Texas and help insure our region is even more connected to the global marketplace.

U.S. Rep. Vela, Brownsville Mayor Tony Martinez, and community leaders with the first train to cross the West Rail Bridge.

The West Rail Bridge will provide for the easy flow of goods and will increase trade output of our region. Local communities will see relief, too - as trains will no longer have to travel though Brownsville - a major cause of congestion and noise.

U.S. Rep. Vela and community leaders cut the ribbon to open Port of Brownsville Dock 16.

Dock 16 will effectively double the daily capacity of the Port of Brownsville and will lead to long-term sustainable economic growth. Additionally, Dock 16 will have the immediate positive effect of creating up to 200 new jobs.

I will continue to fight to strengthen our region’s ability to conduct trade in a manner that is effective and drives our economy forward. I thank everyone who played a role in making these projects a reality.
