Second Amendment Rights

The Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution guarantees the right of each American to keep and bear arms. It states that this right shall not be infringed. In recent years, some have tried to infringe on this right, not through the legislative process, but by taking issues to court. Specifically, there seems to have been a recent effort to sue those who manufacture and sell guns in an attempt to hold them liable for the actions of those who misuse guns after they purchase them. The U.S House of Representatives has attempted to address this problem. I was pleased to support passage of H.R. 1036 in a previous Congress to prohibit civil liability actions from being brought or continued against manufacturers, distributors, dealers, or importers of firearms or ammunition for damages resulting from the misuse of their products by others. In passing this legislation, Congress re-emphasizes that in our crime-fighting efforts, we should be going after and punishing those who break the law, not those who keep it.
