Immigration

I believe that our nation’s broken immigration system is one of the greatest challenges Congress must address.

Congress should pass, without delay, a comprehensive immigration reform bill that curbs illegal immigration while providing immigrants who follow the law and contribute to our society with a chance at the American Dream.

In Massachusetts, skilled and talented foreign students attending our universities are producing breakthrough research and entrepreneurial initiatives that will boost our state’s growing innovation economy. Due to outdated immigration regulations, students who want to remain in the United States are forced to return to their home countries after graduating. Our nation is failing to retain the best and the brightest from around the world because our immigration system was not designed to address the needs of a 21st Century economy.

That’s why comprehensive immigration reform must account for undocumented immigrants who came to the United States as young children and know no other home. To separate these DREAMers from their families through detainment and deportation is not consistent with our American values. Comprehensive immigration reform legislation must ensure this practice does not continue.

At the end of the day, we are a nation of immigrants, and it is our duty to improve the laws that allowed our ancestors to come to this great country. There is bipartisan support for comprehensive immigration reform, and I am hopeful that my colleagues in Congress will work together to get it done sooner rather than later.
