Allen: I Will Always Stand With Israel

WASHINGTON, DC—Today, the House voted to pass H. Res. 11, to reject the Anti-Israel UN Resolution. This bipartisan legislation states Congress’ opposition to the United Nations Security Council Resolution 2334 and calls for its repeal. Rep. Rick Allen (R-Ga.-12), a co-sponsor of this legislation, issued the following statement in support:

“Since 1972, the United States has vetoed 42 anti-Israel resolutions—but that all changed in 2016. In the final days of his Presidency, Obama left our only ally in the Middle East to stand alone by blatantly and deliberately violating longstanding U.S. policy. The Administration’s failure to veto an anti-Israel UN Resolution is a betrayal of the worst kind, and anti-Israel policies will not be tolerated. Our two countries are partners in this world and allies in democracy. I will always stand with Israel.”

Background:

The United States has long recognized that a solution to the Israel-Palestinian conflict can only come through direct, bilateral negotiations between the two parties, thus, it has been longstanding U.S. policy to veto one-sided or anti-Israel resolutions at the United Nations Security Council. In December of 2016, the Obama Administration broke with this precedent and failed to veto UN Security Council Resolution 2334.

This resolution states that the Jewish Quarter of the Old City of Jerusalem and the Western Wall, Judaism’s holiest site, are “occupied territory.” Additionally, it lends legitimacy to efforts by the Palestinian Authority to impose a solution through international organizations like the UN, undermining prospects for peace between the two countries and essentially forcing Israel to give up its best bargaining chip in negotiations with Palestine.
