Before we go too much further, just as businesses give their shareholders an annual review of their performance, I wanted to share an “end of the year” review of all that we worked on in the months we have had in Washington.

Why is it that spending always seems to win in any government? Jefferson warned two hundred years ago that the normal course of things was for government to gain ground and for liberty to yield, and unfortunately yesterday’s Ryan-Murray budget deal was another data point in support of our third President’s hypothesis. I voted against the deal because it raised spending while shattering Washington’s only current platform for financial constraint.

Last night by a vote of 285-144 the House extended the Continuing Resolution through January 15th and raised the debt ceiling through February 7th.

The government shutdown is ongoing, approaching a full two weeks in as I write this, but the direction of the debate is changing and I wanted to update you on it. Congress still hasn’t reached agreement on reopening the government, but facing the reality of needing to raise the debt ceiling by Thursday of next week, the issues of shutdown and debt ceiling have now merged.

Congress is back in session and the first week has already provided a number of fireworks – questions about authorizing military action in Syria, debates over how to fund the government past Sept. 30th, whether Obamacare should be defunded...among others.

Summer has evaporated...well I guess I'm choosing the wrong analogy...as its been soaked this year! My point is that its flown by, and I trust yours has gone well. From my end, it’s hard to believe that I’ve already been in Washington 11 weeks.
