Transportation
Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi delivered remarks at the ribbon cutting ceremony celebrating the new movable median barrier installed on the Golden Gate Bridge, which enhances safety for travelers and bridge workers.
Access to safe, efficient, and reliable transportation is crucial for our country. Americans are tired of the potholes, the traffic delays, and the danger of our crumbling roads and bridges. The American Society of Civil Engineers has given our nation’s infrastructure a D+ rating and our poor infrastructure costs our economy tens of billions of dollars annually. We can no longer continue to pass the buck, it is crucial that Congress act now.
By making critical investments in our transportation systems, we can confront the impending crisis of crumbling infrastructure, while spurring economic development, promoting commerce, improving mobility and reducing air pollution and our dependence on foreign oil. In addition, these crucial transportation projects create thousands of good paying jobs – with better infrastructure, comes bigger paychecks.
On December 3, 2015, I voted in favor of H.R. 22, The Fixing America’s Surface Transportation (FAST) Act. This measure provided guaranteed funding for the next five years for highway, bridge, transportation safety, and public transit projects. While this bill was instrumental in allowing critical infrastructure projects to move forward, it is not enough. It will take trillions of dollars to fully repair our aging system of roads and bridges, and this will only increase the longer we delay action.
When crafting our transportation options, we must work to reduce the focus on single-driving occupancy and increase our options for bus and rail transit, ride-sharing, walking, biking, and transit-oriented development, while creating vibrant livable communities.
Throughout my time in Congress, I have also worked tirelessly to obtain federal assistance for transportation needs in San Francisco, including billions in federal funding for the Third Street Light Rail, Central Subway, Transbay Transit Center, Presidio Parkway, Golden Gate Bridge, SFO, and California high-speed rail.
Please be assured that I will continue to fight for strong, smart investments in the infrastructure of America – infrastructure that creates jobs, improves our quality of life, and enhances safety.
