Reader View: Let’s restore the Land and Water Conservation Fund

Protecting multiple-use access to public lands is very important to living the Western way of life we enjoy in New Mexico. For this reason, I am working to reauthorize and protect the original intent of the Land and Water Conservation Fund. The original agreement made between the states and the federal government was to share the funds provided by the fund. This agreement has been hacked away piece by piece over the years and has left public lands in New Mexico and across the West in critical condition. Today, the fund has turned into a way for the federal government in D.C. to seize more...

Congressman Steve Pearce tells Belarus Leaders - belief in God was central to U.S. Founding Fathers

Issues: Foreign Affairs

It was unprecedented - Congressman Steve Pearce became the first U.S. Congressman to address the Belarusian Parliament and he talked about a subject that would have been forbidden in this former Communist country only a few short years ago - the Holy Bible and its role in the founding of the United States. In a speech before Belarusian national leaders on Thursday, U.S. Congressman Pearce, 2nd D, New Mexico, talked about how biblical concepts of truth, honesty, fairness, trust and hope - the underpinnings of the U.S. Constitution - can benefit the country that was once a part of the...

Lawmakers call for 'virtual Congress'

Reps. Steve Pearce (R-N.M.) and Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.) have introduced a bill urging development of ways for members of Congress to avoid traveling to Washington away from their districts. The resolution offered by Pearce and Swalwell, who both hail from districts on the opposite side of the country as Washington, envisions a Congress allowing members to vote and participate in committee hearings via the Internet.

Over 1000 Gather to Hear Reps. Beto O’Rourke (D) and Steve Pearce (R) Discuss Better Border Bill

...I’ve got to hand it to both Steve Pearce and Beto O’Rourke. I overheard Rep. Pearce say that he trusts O’Rourke and O’Rourke trusts him, so they decided to charge ahead with a bill that would help their region and stop waiting on Washington. I couldn’t agree more. But as I hope to see Washington embrace this new bill, I hope just as much that Pearce and O’Rourke will channel some of the energy from Saturday’s momentous gathering to push Republicans in Washington to set aside their excuses and pass immigration reform with this responsible, new border language included.

O'Rourke, Pearce Model Bipartisanship

Reps. Steve Pearce and Beto O'Rourke are something of a political odd couple, but they've become a model of working to find common ground while coming from differing political philosophies. Pearce, a New Mexico Republican, and O'Rourke, a Texas Democrat, have come together to propose immigration-related reforms at a time their parties struggle to agree on anything. ..."Immigration reform is still possible this Congress. Congressman O'Rourke and I have now introduced two simple, one-step proposals that provide a strong starting point," Pearce said. "Our...

She's American, He's Mexican - They're Caught in Limbo

...Rep. Steve Pearce has co-sponsored a bill, H.R. 3431, with Texas Democrat Beto O’Rourke, that would grant authorities greater discretion in reviewing past minor or technical immigration violations, or those that occurred when the spouse was underage. Pearce, who opposes a Senate bill that takes a broad approach to immigration reform, says he would prefer to see reform happen piecemeal, starting with an issue such as the plight of married couples like Emily and Raymundo Cruz. “I feel that we ought to be taking this thing in bite-sized chunks instead of in big packages,” he said. While it...
