Ranking Member

Ranking Member John Conyers, Jr. was first elected to represent the city of Detroit and surrounding communities in 1964.  Currently serving his 24th term in Congress, he is the second most senior member in the House of Representatives.  In 1989, Congressman Conyers became the chairman of the House Committee on Government Operations (now referred to as the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform).  In 2006, he was chosen by his colleagues to lead the House Committee on the Judiciary, where he was chairman for the 110th and 111th sessions of Congress.

Congressman Conyers was one of 13 founding members of the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC).  Created in 1969, the CBC was designed to ensure that concerns of African American and minority constituencies were addressed.  He is considered the Dean of the CBC.

Throughout his time in Congress, Ranking Member Conyers has been a strong champion for civil rights and civil liberties.  Some of his major legislative accomplishments include the Help America Vote Act of 2002, the Violence Against Women Act of 1994, the Motor Voter Bill of 1993, the Martin Luther King Holiday Act of 1983, the Alcohol Warning Label Act of 1988, and the Jazz Preservation Act of 1987.

Prior to serving in Congress, Ranking Member Conyers served in the National Guard and the United States Army Corps of Engineers in the Korean War.  He received both his Bachelor of Arts and his Juris Doctor degrees from Wayne State University.

Ranking Member Conyers is married and has two sons, John III and Carl.
