Hurricane Preparedness

It is important to be prepared for hurricane season, from June to November. Below is some useful information on hurricane preparedness. To receive emergency updates from NY-ALERT, please subscribe here

Be Prepared:
  • Create an emergency supply kit. 
  • Create and discuss an evacuation plan with your family. Include routes to local shelters, and plans for pets and family members with special medical needs.
  • Review any insurance policies. 
  • Fill up your car's gas tank.
During a Hurricane:
  • Listen to the radio for critical information from the National Weather Service, or sign up for NY-ALERT. 
  • Check emergency supply kit. 
  • Bring inside anything that could be picked up by the wind. 
  • Close all windows and doors. Close and board up all windows and doors with plywood, if you do not have hurricane shutters. 
  • Turn your refrigerator and freezor to the coldest setting and keep closed as much as possible, in case of power outages. 
  • Turn of propane tank. 
  • Unplug small appliances
  • Listen to and follow evacuation orders, or any other emergency notifications. 
Emergency Checklist:
  • Water, one gallon of water per person per day, for drinking and sanitation
  • Food, at least a three-day supply of non-perishable food
  • Battery-powered radio and a NOAA Weather Radio with tone alert, and extra batteries for both
  • Flashlight and extra batteries
  • First Aid kit
  • Whistle to signal for help
  • Moist towelettes, garbage bags and plastic ties for personal sanitation
  • Wrench or pliers to turn off utilities
  • Can opener for food
  • Warm bedding and clothing, if temperature requires
  • Rain gear
  • Cash, travelers checks, or change
  • Paper towels
  • Fire extinguisher
  • Matches
  • Disinfectant, bleach and  mosquito repellent
  • Cell phone with chargers, inverter or solar charger
  • Important documents including: Insurance policies, personal identification, and bank account s
