Maloney: Sessions as AG is Worse than Fox Guarding the Henhouse

Calls for Senate to Reject Sessions Based on Abhorrent Civil Rights Record

Washington — On the first day of Senator Jeff Sessions confirmation hearing for United States Attorney General, Representative Sean Patrick Maloney (NY-18) called for the rejection of his nomination due to his dangerous record on civil rights and LGBT protections.

“The Senate cannot confirm an Attorney General nominee who doesn’t believe in civil rights to oversee our country’s civil rights protections – it’s worse than letting a fox guard the henhouse,” said LGBT Equality Caucus Co-Chair Rep. Maloney. “Jeff Sessions thinks it’s ok to fire people like me or my husband or even refuse our kids childcare simply because our family looks a little bit different than most families – and we can’t allow someone with those beliefs to be our nation’s highest attorney, charged with protecting the rights of all Americans.”

Representative Sean Patrick Maloney is the first openly gay member of Congress from New York. After 22 years together, he married his husband Randy Florke in June 2014 in Cold Spring, NY where they live with their three children.
