I am committed to ensuring that our children are ready for a career after graduating high school and college. Unfortunately, after years without accountability, our education system is not doing enough to meet this basic commitment we have to our young people and their parents. I will work to create an educational system that emphasizes high standards, accountability for results, local control, transparency and parental choice. Federal funding to the states should be distributed to the states with discretion to spend federal funds on new, creative and accountable programs that will better educate children while controlling the out-of-control cost of education.
In addition to focusing on traditional students, I know it is critical that our educational system also provide training and education for displaced workers and others seeking to enter or re-enter the workforce. A trained workforce with skills to match the needs of business means higher employment and a stronger economy. This is why I’m proud to have worked to pass the Supporting Knowledge and Investing in Lifelong Skills (SKILLS) Act. The SKILLS Act reduces wasteful bureaucracy and empowers individuals by streamlining government services to ensure more dollars are actually spent on workforce training. I will continue to work to improve the job-training programs in place and make sure federal funds are spent truly training Hoosiers for the jobs that exist.

So when a school in her congressional district achieves that honor, she likes to help celebrate. Carmel’s West Clay Elementary recently earned the distinction of National Blue Ribbon School for 2016, the first time it has earned the honor.
