ROKITA CONDEMNS U.N. RESOLUTION TARGETING ISRAEL

REAFFIRMS LONGSTANDING U.S. POLICY

Washington, D.C. – Following up on comments made two weeks ago, Rep. Todd Rokita issued the following statement today after the House of Representatives stood against the recent U.N. vote condemning Israeli settlements in the West Bank:

“The U.N. should work to keep peace and develop friendly relations among the nations of the world, not defame and bully Israel. The Obama Administration’s decision to abstain from voting on the recent anti-Israel resolution is unfortunately not surprising given its record of undermining our friendship and alliance with Israel. My colleagues and I sent a clear message that Congress and the American people continue to stand with Israel, and I look forward to working with President-elect Donald Trump to protect our ally and prevent future actions which jeopardize the peace process.”

H. Res. 11 - Objecting to United Nations Security Council Resolution 2334 as an obstacle to Israeli-Palestinian peace, and for other purposes states the House of Representatives’ disapproval of United Nations Security Resolution 2334.  The resolution is cosponsored by Rep. Rokita and passed by a vote of 342 to 80, with 4 voting “present.”

In the 114th Congress, Rep. Rokita cosponsored H.Con.Res. 165, which expresses the sense of Congress to reaffirm longstanding American policy in support of a direct bilaterally negotiated settlement of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and expressing opposition to UN Security Council resolutions imposing a solution to the conflict.  H.Con.Res. 165 passed the House by voice vote on November 29 and was received in the Senate.

In the 115th Congress, Rep. Rokita also cosponsored H.Res.14 - Disapproving of President Obama and his administration's refusal to veto the anti-Israel resolution adopted by the United Nations Security Council on December 23, 2016.  This resolution expresses the House of Representatives’ disapproval of the United Nations Security Resolution 2334, and disapproves of the Obama administration’s choice to abstain instead of veto the resolution.
