The Congressman takes very seriously the responsibility that he has to represent local interests in Washington. He is keenly aware of the nuances of and challenges facing this geographically diverse and expansive district.
Over the long term, the district lags beyond the country in job creation. To fight this, Congressman Cartwright is working to create good paying jobs that cannot be outsourced and investing in the small business that drive economic growth.
As an outgrowth of this, the Congressman is working to restore freight and passenger rail service to all parts of the district.

Washington, D.C. – Yesterday, U.S. Congressman Matt Cartwright met with Pennsylvania Secretary of Corrections John Wetzel regarding the possible closure of state prisons located in Northeastern Pennsylvania.
Scranton, PA – Today, U.S. Representative Matt Cartwright announced that the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), an agency within the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, has awarded a total of $850,569 in Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) funds to fire companies throughout Pennsylvania’s 17th Congressional District during the month of August.
The grant funds will be used by each fire company to purchase a variety of equipment including turn out gear, breathing apparatuses, and a fire engine. The grant funds will be distributed as follows:

Rep. Cartwright Announces $350,000 in DOJ Funds for Domestic Violence Service Center in Wilkes-Barre
Wilkes-Barre, PA – Today, U.S. Representative Matt Cartwright announced that a grant in the amount of $350,000 has been awarded to the Domestic Violence Service Center (DVSC) in Wilkes-Barre through the Transitional Housing Grant Assistance Program from the Department of Justice (DOJ).
Easton, PA – Today, U.S. Representative Matt Cartwright announced that a grant in the amount of $420,226 has been awarded to the Nurture Nature Center in Easton through NASA’s Competitive Program for Science Museums, Planetariums, and NASA Visitor Centers Plus Other Opportunities (CP4SMPVC+).
The goal of the CP4SMPVC+ Program is to get more kids interested in education and careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM).
Scranton, PA – Today, U.S. Rep. Matt Cartwright announced that a grant worth $96,753 has been awarded to The Wright Center through the Ryan White Title III HIV Capacity Development and Planning Program. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) funds will be used for HIV treatment capacity planning and development.
Wilkes-Barre, PA – Today, Congressman Matt Cartwright announced that a grant in the amount of $28,872 has been awarded to the City of Wilkes-Barre through the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program (JAG). The funds—shared with the city of Hazelton—will be used for training and overtime pay for the Wilkes-Barre Police Department.
Washington, DC – Today, U.S. Representative Matt Cartwright announced that the Department of Health and Human Services has awarded a Health Services grant in the amount of $198,330 to Catholic Social Services of Wilkes-Barre through the Administration for Children and Families’ Family and Youth Services Bureau (FYSB).
Scranton, PA – Today, U.S. Representative Matt Cartwright announced that the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has awarded a Rural Development Loan to Germania Hose Company. The funds will be used to upgrade existing facilities.
The $85,000 community facility loan will allow for renovations that include HVAC, floors, painting, doors, exterior signage, and ADA compliance renovations to the restrooms.
Scranton, PA – Today, Congressman Matt Cartwright announced that the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) has awarded a grant in the amount of $94,268 to the City of Scranton through the Office of Justice Programs’ Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) program.
