Nov 15, 2016
Press Release

Indianapolis, IN - Today, Congressman André Carson (IN-07) along with Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett, congratulated Indianapolis for having the 10th highest volunteer rate in the nation. In a report released this morning by the Corporation for National and Community Service, Indianapolis ranked 10th among the 51 largest cities across the country for volunteerism.

“I am fortunate to come from Indiana where a sense of community is the norm,” said Congressman André Carson. “I am proud of my fellow Hoosiers who, time and again, have demonstrated their willingness to put their skills and experience to good use in improving our neighborhoods and communities.”

The report finds residents in Indy volunteered 38.9 million hours equaling an estimated economic impact of $795 million dollars in 2015.

“Indianapolis is blessed to have incredible non-profit, faith-based and community organizations. Yet the work they do wouldn’t be possible without the thousands of volunteer hours our residents pledge to these groups each year,” said Indianapolis Mayor, Joe Hogsett. “We are honored to have our hard work recognized nationally and will continue to celebrate our community’s dedication to making Indianapolis a great place for all.”

The annual report is produced through a partnership with the U.S. Census Bureau and the Bureau of Labor Statistics, and provides a comprehensive collection of information on volunteering and civic engagement with detailed data for all 50 states and nearly 200 cities. Current data was obtained during 2015.
