Budget and Spending

Washington borrows $3.8 billion every day. Translated into the life of the average American family, that’s the equivalent of racking up $21,959 in credit card debt each year. Anyone who passed high school economics knows that path isn’t sustainable – not for the average family, and not for Washington.

Executive Overreach

President Obama campaigned as a champion of transparency, yet he increasingly rules as an unaccountable monarch.

Emergency Preparedness

Recent emergencies have impressed upon us the importance of being calm and prepared for some of the unexpected or unanticipated twists and turns life sometimes surprises us with. People are much less likely to panic in a crisis – and thus prevail in a bad situation – if they have a plan and have their family prepared ahead of time so that everyone knows what they need to do.

Economy and Jobs

Hardworking American families are struggling, and Washington isn’t helping. Despite years of speeches, campaign promises, and trillion dollar deficit spending bills designed to jumpstart the economy, our economic engine remains stalled and too many of our friends and neighbors can’t find jobs

Education

As a father, grandfather, businessman, and Congressman, I understand the importance of a quality education. Sadly, America has fallen behind in our responsibility of preparing the next generation with the best possible education.

Energy

One of America’s most important goals should be achieving energy independence. Our policies must reflect an “all-of-the-above” strategy, making greater use of our oil and natural gas reserves and promoting greater use of our technology. Instead of President Obama’s “war on coal,” we need common-sense policies to safely and effectively use America’s abundant resources, both renewable and non-renewable.

Financial Services

The financial services industry is critical to the Charlotte region’s economy. While Bank of America and Wells Fargo are the big names, the 9th District is home to more than 2500 businesses related to financial services. To help support these local businesses and spur our economy, I worked hard to be appointed to the House Committee on Financial Services.

Foreign Affairs

America is the last global superpower. We did not seek this privilege, but we accept the incredible responsibility. As a Nation, we do not step back from the challenge of doing the right thing.
Second Amendment

2nd Amendment Rights

Gun control is an emotional issue, and I have engaged in many heartfelt conversations with constituents on both sides of the issue. As a father and grandfather, I share the desire to prevent future tragedies like Sandy Hook and Aurora.

Health care

Americans are blessed with one of the greatest healthcare systems in the world, but rapidly rising costs necessitate reform. These reforms must increase access to affordable health insurance without creating a bloated government bureaucracy that comes between patient and doctor.

Immigration

Sadly, today’s immigration system is badly broken. Because of misguided reforms in previous generations, we now lack a fair, orderly, and efficient immigration system. Far too many individuals are in the shadows of our society, while others are caught in a cycle of poverty and government dependency.

National Security

According to the Constitution, the primary role of the Federal Government is to protect against threats, both foreign and domestic.

Tax Reform

Our economy is stuck in neutral. Raising taxes on hardworking Americans and small businesses is irresponsible and will further strangle economic growth. North Carolina families should be allowed to keep more of their hard-earned money and reinvest it into our economy.

Transportation

Few topics generate as much passion in the Charlotte region as traffic. Years of explosive growth and decades of neglect by Raleigh have created the perfect storm. Each year, the respected Texas Transportation Institute finds Charlotte has some of the worst congestion in the Nation.

Veterans Issues

Our brave men and women in uniform are America’s real superheroes, the ones our children should admire. Suzanne and I join a grateful nation in honoring our active-duty military, veterans, and their families. North Carolina is home to almost 800,000 veterans and they are the pride of our state. One of the great privileges of serving as a United States Congressman is working to ensure our veterans have access to the benefits they have been promised.
