Biography

Robert Pittenger is serving his second term in the United States Congress, representing the citizens of North Carolina’s 9th Congressional District, which includes portions of Iredell, Mecklenburg, and Union counties.  Congressman Pittenger’s district is home to America’s second largest financial center, located in Charlotte, features a growing and nationally recognized cluster of energy firms, and is the heart of “NASCAR Country,” home to more than one dozen NASCAR teams and many of the sport’s top drivers.

Congressman Pittenger is a Member of the House Committee on Financial Services, and sits on the Financial Institutions and Consumer Credit Subcommittee, as well as the Monetary Policy and Trade Subcommittee.  Recognizing his leadership in efforts to target terrorism financing, Financial Services Chairman Jeb Hensarling appointed Congressman Pittenger the Vice Chairman of the Bipartisan Task Force to Investigate Terrorism Financing.  House Speaker John Boehner also appointed Congressman Pittenger to serve on the Congressional-Executive Commission on China, which monitors human rights and the development of the rule of law in China. 

Seeking to change Washington’s rancorous tone, Congressman Pittenger co-founded and Co-Chairs the bipartisan United Solutions caucus, with Members committed to moving forward on fiscal issues, including tax and entitlement reform. 

As Chairman of the Congressional Task Force on Terrorism and Unconventional Warfare, Congressman Pittenger has met with over 200 world leaders and security experts to advocate increased global cooperation in the fight against ISIS and radical Islamist jihad, and organized two major forums bringing together Members of Parliament from nearly 30 European nations to discuss Intelligence and Security concerns with Congressional leaders.  A third forum is planned for Fall 2015 in Washington.  He has also produced a Preparedness Manual, available at PrepareNow.com, to help American families and businesses be protected against terrorist attacks.  

Congressman Pittenger brings a strong conservative voice to his role with House Leadership, serving as a Member of the Whip Team and on the Steering Committee of the Republican Study Committee.

Born and raised in Texas, Robert was the youngest of four children.  His dad was a small businessman, and his mother raised the children.  Their guidance provided a solid foundation for honesty, hard work, and dedication.  Upon graduating from the University of Texas, Congressman Pittenger worked for 10 years as Assistant to the President of Campus Crusade for Christ, helping to bring the work of the organization to over 170 countries.  In 1985, Congressman Pittenger and his family moved to Charlotte, where he built a national real estate investment company from scratch.

During his tenure in the North Carolina Senate (2003-2008), Congressman Pittenger focused on strengthening the state’s financial foundation, identifying over $1.5 billion in spending cuts to balance the state’s budget and fighting for lower taxes, medical litigation reform, and to eliminate waste and fraud in Medicaid.  He was a lead sponsor of Right to Life legislation and the marriage amendment, and has been recognized for his strong support of the Second Amendment.

Congressman Pittenger believes he was elected to serve.  Since taking office, Congressman Pittenger and his staff have helped more than 2000 constituents cut through bureaucratic red tape, responded directly to over 62,000 letters, and hosted more than 30 town hall meetings.  Congressman Pittenger also hosted a forum to raise awareness of human trafficking, brought a national expert to Charlotte to help small businesses prepare for Obamacare, and assisted local non-profits dealing with IRS and passport/visa issues.

Congressman Pittenger and his wife, Suzanne, live in Charlotte and have four grown children and nine wonderful grandchildren.  They attend Central Church of God.
