The American patent system was enshrined by our founding fathers in the Constitution to promote innovation and the progress of science and the useful arts. Since that time, when functioning as originally intended, it has served to bolster U.S. entrepreneurship, economic advancement and employ millions of workers across the nation.

“The Senate has put partisan politics aside and courageously taken a substantial step forward on behalf of over two million long-term unemployed Americans. It is now time for Speaker Boehner and House Republicans to do the right thing for our country and allow a vote on the legislation. Over 198,000 New Yorkers have been cut off from federal unemployment compensation benefits since December 2013. It is time for House Republicans to act, as further delay will unnecessarily injure the ability of our economy to continue its recovery.”

"House Republicans have renewed their attack on working families, the middle class and seniors by putting forth another budget that callously balances itself on the backs of the most vulnerable Americans. Among other measures, the House Republican budget seeks to turn Medicare into a voucher program, dramatically reduce spending on higher education and deny American workers the raise they deserve. Once again, the Ryan budget makes draconian cuts to our social safety net programs while protecting wasteful corporate loopholes and cutting taxes for the wealthy. The Republican Budget is a product of the same reckless world view that shutdown the government for sixteen days to satisfy the ideological thirst of extreme right wing conservatives. I strongly oppose the adoption of the Ryan budget, and will work hard to make sure that it is once again banished to the dustbin of history.”

“One of the reasons why many of us do these types of addresses in January is to lay out an agenda of things you want to work on,” said Jeffries. “It gives you, your staff and everyone around you a blueprint as to the type of issues you want to tackle, and then you can measure the progress you have been able to make at the end of the year and figure out what else you can work on to complete the things that were started and hopefully be able to point to some of the things that got accomplished.”
