No Exemption for Washington from ObamaCare Act

The Office of Personnel Management has ruled that members of Congress and their staff will receive a special taxpayer-financed subsidy for the ObamaCare exchanges not available to other Americans using health care exchanges.

When Americans struggle under the burdens of laws such as ObamaCare, they don't have the luxury of not complying. Congress must abide by the laws that they pass, and putting the political elite above both the law and their constituents is unacceptable. This is a simple issue of fairness: members of Congress, their staff, and the political elite should not be given special relief from the harmful effects of ObamaCare.

The Obama Administration cannot override the law and grant special subsidies to members of Congress and their staffs, which is why I introduced the No Exemption for Washington from ObamaCare Act. This legislation will require members of Congress and congressional staff to abide by the terms of ObamaCare and will discontinue taxpayer subsidies that were engineered by an Obama Administration rule but which lack authorization from the law.

I remain committed to making members of Congress abide by the terms of the health care law they enacted and ending illegal subsidies. To that end, I have declined my taxpayer-funded health care plan and hope my colleagues will rightfully do the same.

Members of Congress are out of touch, plain and simple. That could not be more clear than the latest imbroglio over Congress’ unlawful exemption from Obamacare... some members of Congress can’t stand the stench of their colleague’s hypocrisy. Senator Sen. David Vitter (R-LA) and Congressman Rep. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) have introduced legislation to eliminate the congressional Obamacare exemption and restore the law as written and signed by President Obama in March of 2010.
