Congressman Denny Heck statement on Russian interference in 2016 U.S. presidential election

Dec 15, 2016
Press Release

OLYMPIA, WASH. – Today Rep. Denny Heck (D-Wash.) released a statement calling on Congress to establish an independent commission to further investigate Russian interference in the 2016 U.S. presidential election:

“Our passports have the Great Seal of the United States, and we all pledge our allegiance to the American flag, not any political party. Members of Congress take an oath to protect and defend the Constitution, not the plans or ambitions of a party platform. If we allow ourselves to get too focused on party loyalty or success, we put our country’s best interest in jeopardy. We need to take this threat seriously, and show every nation in the world that when our country’s democracy is interfered with, we band together and become even stronger as a result.

“I believe an independent commission is the best avenue in which to immediately tackle this problem. I appreciate my colleagues on both sides of the aisle coming together to bring this to fruition. This commission should be in operation as soon as possible and needs to be able to provide recommendations before the end of 2017.”
