Art Competition

Art Competition

Each year, the Congressional Institute sponsors a visual arts competition that is open to high school students across the country to recognize artistic talent.

The Congressional Art Competition began in 1982 to provide an opportunity for members of Congress to encourage and recognize the artistic talents of their young constituents. Since then, over 650,000 high school students have been involved with the nationwide competition.

My office is currently soliciting work from students who reside or attend school in Oregon’s First Congressional District. A panel of local artists will select the winner, whose artwork will be publicly displayed in the U.S. Capitol for a year. Additionally, the Institute will fly the student artist whose artwork is selected and one guest to the U.S. Capitol for an award ceremony in June. Our goal is to receive at least one submission from every high school in the district I represent. Artwork entered in the contest must be two-dimensional and may be up to 28 inches by 28 inches (including the frame) and up to 4 inches in depth.  Accepted mediums for the artwork are as follows:

  • Paintings: oil, acrylics, watercolor etc.
  • Drawings: colored pencil, pencil, ink, marker, pastels, charcoal (it is recommended that charcoal and pastel drawings be fixed)
  • Collages: must be two-dimensional
  • Prints: lithographs, silkscreen, block prints
  • Mixed Media: use of more than two mediums such as pencil, ink, watercolor etc.
  • Computer-Generated Art
  • Photographs

All entries must be original in concept, design and execution and may not violate U.S. copyright laws.

All entries for the competition must be received in my Beaverton District Office, 12725 SW Millikan Way, Suite 220 Beaverton, OR 97205, no later than Friday, April 15, 2016. Details for the 2016 competition can be found here:

I will announce the winner of the competition at a reception for all participants and their families in May. The date and location for the reception will be announced soon.
