Immigration

Our nation’s immigration system is broken and in desperate need of reform. Any solution must have border security first, no amnesty, and reforms to our existing visa program. We are a nation of immigrants, but also a nation of laws.

Immigrants have made enormous contributions to our society. They have waited their turn, followed the law, and become citizens. However, tens of thousands of people have broken our laws, crossed our border illegally, overstayed a visa, and now demand special treatment.

This year, our nation experienced a crisis at the border like we have never seen. Tens of thousands of people from Central America and Mexico – mostly unaccompanied minors – illegally crossed the southern U.S. border into Texas and other border states, flooding detention centers, pushing the U.S. Border Patrol beyond its limits, and placing a massive strain on Texas’ resources. Because of this swell of illegal border crossings, the apprehension rate at the Southwest border is 412% higher than this time last year!

President Obama continues enacting his pro-amnesty programs like DACA and the DREAM Act, and abusing past programs that were not intended for immigration purposes – like the 2008 TVRPA law originally intended to protect victims of trafficking, not illegal immigrants coming over on their own dime or will. President Obama should be stringently enforcing our laws and securing our border. Without true border security, we cannot even begin to address the other components of immigration reform.

“This administration has led these young people to believe that if they can just get to America or Texas soil they can become citizens, and that’s just not the case,” said Williams.

This week, President Obama is going around the country to re-hash some of the themes from his State of the Union. I have a better idea: how about he start apologizing for the last seven years?

I’ve decided to help the president by highlighting some of the lowlights that he should address. I’ve also taken the liberty of assisting the president’s speech writers by putting this in a speech format for him:

I have always said that I believe the role of government is to defend the borders, build infrastructure, collect our taxes and then get out of the way. Under President Obama, we have witnessed an executive branch that refuses to enforce immigration law but has expanded government like never before while our roads and bridges crumble beneath us.

Two Texas lawmakers wrote President Obama this week to oppose a possible plan to use Fort Hood military base to house unaccompanied minors who illegally crossed into the U.S. from Mexico.

Republican congressmen John Carter and Roger Williams, whose districts both include parts of the sprawling military base, say they wrote the letter after learning the Pentagon has assigned a team to assess the possibility of using it and other bases to house young immigrants.
