The Hill: Bill would suspend foreign aid to Central American countries

Rep. Randy Weber (R-Texas) has re-introduced legislation to withhold foreign aid to Central American nations over illegal immigration.

The measure would withhold foreign aid for Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador until Congress establishes they have taken "sufficient action" to limit illegal immigration to the U.S.

Most of the more than 67,000 unaccompanied immigrant children crossing the southern border last summer came from those countries.

Weber said his bill would motivate Central American countries to stop the flow of immigrants.

"Countries in South America are using our current laws against us," Weber said in a statement.

"When detained, these children require healthcare and social services paid for by our constituents. These failed policies must be stopped once and for all," Weber said.

Weber previously introduced the measure in the last Congress, but it never made it through the House Foreign Affairs Committee or the floor.
