Agriculture

I believe that our country’s agricultural policy should reflect a commitment to effective food production, responsible farming, and the health and welfare of our community. A healthy agriculture industry means that Americans do not go hungry, and that our agricultural system has the resources and structural organization to meet the growing needs of our country.

Approximately 350,000 people are employed by the farming sector, making it one of the largest commercial industries in our state. Maryland farmers, especially in Western Maryland, are important suppliers of poultry, dairy, livestock, corn and wheat to our nation’s food systems helping to feed our country and contributing to the economic growth of our communities. I support policies that help create a fair and effective playing field for Maryland farmers and will continue to advocate for a common sense approach to food production.

I understand the importance of consistency and certainty in our nation’s agricultural policy. At meetings across the district with farmers I’ve learned how important it is for Congress to pass a comprehensive Farm Bill that provides guidance and certainty for producers. A five year Farm Bill that reforms federal farm policies and gives producers the certainty they need to plan for the future is best for the country. I will continue to work alongside my Congressional colleagues to make sure a comprehensive Farm Bill is passed prior to the expiration of the current Farm Bill.

Our agricultural policy should also maintain effective food and nutritional programs, so that no American will go hungry.  I strongly support the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), which is one of our country’s most critical anti-hunger programs, helping more than 47 million Americans meet their basic food needs. At a time when more than 50 million Americans face the threat of food insecurity, it is more important than ever that we ensure critical programs like SNAP are properly funded and efficiently delivered.

As the 113th Congress moves forward, I will continue to advocate for an agricultural policy that is fair to farmers, respectful of the environment, and helpful to those most in need.
