Higgins Announces Application Period for SAFER Federal Fire Grants

Jan 9, 2017
Press Release

Congressman Brian Higgins (NY-26) announced the application window for grants provided through the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Services (SAFER) program is now open.

“The SAFER program can provide local departments with additional resources to assist with recruitment and retention efforts, ultimately strengthening the response to emergency situations,” said Congressman Higgins.  “We encourage Western New York volunteer and professional fire companies to apply.”

SAFER grants are aimed at increasing the number of firefighters and enhancing a department’s ability to comply with federal standards to ensure their communities have adequate protection from fire and fire-related hazards.  This year Congress appropriated $345 million for the SAFER Program.  All applications are due before the application period closes on February 10, 2017 at 5:00pm.

A number of tools are available to applicants through the federal fire grant website: www.fema.gov/firegrants.  Applicants with additional questions may also contact the SAFER grant helpdesk by calling 1-866-274-0960 or email at firegrants@fema.dhs.gov.
