The Library of Congress in the K-12 Classroom
The Library of Congress, through its website, offers free public access to more than 19 million rare primary source materials, including maps, photographs, documents, films, sound recordings and more. Through the use of technology, the Library’s Educational Outreach Division is able to bring our unparalleled collections and expertise directly into the lives and classrooms of America’s young people.
The Library has resources for K-12 educators, classroom materials, free training programs through the Teaching with Primary Sources (TPS) program and a professional development curriculum that can be customized and downloaded to implement all or part of the Library's TPS program.
Professional Development Opportunities Offered by the Library
Through its TPS program, the Library provides professional development opportunities for teachers, library media specialists, staff development and technology coordinators, and administrators who are able to visit Washington, D.C., as well as for those who cannot.
In-house Training and Web conferences
The Library's Education Outreach Division conducts on-request TPS workshops for teachers on using the Library’s education resources in their classrooms. Subject matter focus can include literature, poetry, history, performing arts, immigration, the Civil War and a full range of other topics. Sessions can be conducted at the Library or via Web conference.
Summer Teacher Institutes
Each summer, the Library’s Educational Outreach Division conducts several four-day Summer Institutes. Teachers from across the country attend and learn methods for the effective use of primary sources. Information and schedules for the Summer Teacher Institutes are posted online each January, along with an application form.
Customizable Professional Development
The Library’s nationally-reviewed professional development curriculum is available through a robust online system. This system offers any educator, at any time, the ability to customize TPS activities for use at the school, district or state level for delivery in a face-to-face, online or blended format.
Online Modules
Several self-paced, interactive TPS modules are available online to meet teacher continuing education requirements. These modules can be used alone or integrated into existing online professional development programs.
Videoconferences
The Library’s Reference staff offers several core and enrichment presentations via videoconference. Topics include: Analyzing Primary Sources; Treasure Hunting; Gathering Community Stories; and Sleuthing and Maps.
Library of Congress Primary Source Websites
The Teachers Page provides educators with access to millions of primary source documents and the tools to put them in use in the classroom.
The World Digital Library gives users access to digital material (manuscripts, maps, prints and photos, books) from 45 partner institutions in 29 countries and functions in seven languages: Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish.
American Memory contains over 11 million primary sources related to American history and culture.
America’s Library brings history to life for young learners through interactive educational games and stories about America’s cultural heritage.
Thomas provides up to the minute legislative information from the current as well as past Congresses.
The Veteran’s History Project site features first-hand accounts of soldiers who have served their country both at home and abroad.
Lifelong Literacy shows ways to celebrate and encourage reading at all ages.
Library of Congress Experience provides a virtual tour of the Thomas Jefferson Building and offers personalized interaction with exhibition content.
