Energy security is an issue that affects the day-to-day life of all Americans. The United States has recently become the number one petroleum producer in the world; this is largely due to an increase in the extraction of natural gas from shale through a process called hydraulic fracturing, or “fracking.” It is imperative we do all we can to achieve energy security to insulate the U.S. economy from uncertainty of global oil prices – a threat to both our economy and national security.

I have been a long time opponent of federal regulations stifling the practice of hydraulic fracturing to capture natural gas. Permitting fracking can be used as a double edged sword, creating energy security in the U.S. while providing jobs for thousands of Americans.

Besides hydraulic fracturing, I strongly support expansion of off-shore oil drilling, approval of the Keystone XL Pipeline, and the opening of Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) to drilling. These steps will enable America to reduce our dependence on foreign oil and help create good-paying jobs at home.  

I believe there are alternative methods to produce clean power rather than placing strict regulations on oil refineries which increase energy prices and results in a loss of jobs. We should pursue alternative forms of energy such as wind, solar, hydropower and bio-fuel. I have a long standing record of supporting energy tax credits for individuals and businesses investing in alternative and renewable energy, including for expansion of natural gas vehicles and refueling infrastructure.

I am also a supporter of the 45Q tax credit which is awarded to facilities that practice the process of carbon capture and storage. The technology used is capable of capturing up to 90% of the carbon emissions from fossil fuel power plants which is then safely stored and ultimately used to assist in the process of oil extraction. This credit helps to reduce carbon emissions without the use of strict regulations.

Furthermore, I recently voted for the Energy Efficiency Improvement Act which passed as a bi-partisan bill. The act certifies and recognizes commercial building tenants who achieve high levels of energy efficiency. I will continue my support of clean power.
